IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is a functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorder characterised by abdominal pain and altered bowel habit in the absence of a specific pathology. Since no clear diagnostic markers exist for the disease all the definition of IBS is based on clinical presentation
Symptoms that are commonly associated with IBS include
Sense of incomplete evacuation of bowel
Passage of mucus
Alternate constipation and diarrhoea
Nausea, anorexia, tiredness
Attributing factors of IBS includes combination of many factors. G.I infection, food intolerance and psychological traits can contribute to it. In this disorder the digestive tract is sensitive to stress, diet, drugs, hormones or minor irritants.
In Ayurveda IBS can be considered as Agnimandyaja Vikara. The major dosha involved in its aetiology is Vata together with association of pitta and kapha. The functional dependency between normal vata dosha and Agni is altered in IBS.
The treatment module is planned according to predominant symptoms. Langhana, dipana, and pachana drugs are given in initial stage. Adequate panchakarma procedures are administered. Since there is involvement of psychic factor appropriate counselling, yoga and manaprasadakar treatments are given. Along with this a healthy diet regimen is advocated.
